Nursery:
This week in Nursery we have been talking about the Olympics.  The children went out and sat on the field to watch the local school’s Olympic torch come into the school playground on Thursday.  In assembly we learnt an Olympics song with actions!! Thank you Miss Plummer!
Some of the children have started to think about meeting their new teacher and we have done lots of talking about what is happening next year, for those children moving to Reception and those staying Nursery.
We have been working on our Teddy Bears Picnic invitation.  These will be sent home next week for our Teddies.
Please could we remind you that the children need to have a hat to wear at Nursery and suncream should be applied before they come in for their session.
Thank you, Have a good weekend

Year 2
2C have had a super week preparing to write our recount on our trip to Colchester Zoo and then writing it up. We have looked at track races at the Olympics and the length of the races in metres. In maths we have been working hard on our multiplication and division facts. Miss Rothwell got the children to make some insects in DT, they are not finished yet but will be fantastic when done.
We have had so much fun in our sports week. It was lovely to see the Southend Olympic flame and the two sports personalities who visited. On Thursday afternoon the year 5 and 6 children played games on the field with us and we all enjoyed it so much.

Year 3
This week is sports week and to celebrate that we have had a jam packed week of activities. We have taken part in sports day, had an afternoon of whole school games and developed a range of sporting skills.
R favourite part of the week was the pentathlon with 3B. We took part in events like hurdles, discus, javelin, long jump and sprinting. We competed in this event because we started to learn about the Ancient Greek Olympics and the events that were used back then.
Jay’s favourite event was sprinting because he achieved first position. Cameron also liked the sprinting because he enjoys running. Eryn loved the hurdles because she likes to jump and John came first in the discus and was excited about throwing so far.
We would like to say a massive THANK YOU to Mrs Weddell for working so hard this week and arranging all of the brilliant events this week!
Hope you have a great weekend!!
Miss Crumbie, Mrs Johnson and 3C

It has been a really busy and exciting week at Darlinghurst with lots going on with the focus on sport and games at it has been National Sports Week. As a  class we have been active everyday and have played a variety of sports, including some many of us had never tried before. We have seen the arrival on Thursday of the replica Olympic torch and the whole school as there to greet the runners that carried it from Our lady Of Lourdes. We had a very special guest come to talk to us on Thursday morning – Poppy Lake the 2011 and 2012 ‘British Schools’ High Jump champion. She spoke to us about working hard to achieve your goals in life and was an inspiration as she had achieved so much by the age of 16. W have also measure her personal best jump of 1m 73cm on the board and there were quite a few of us that couldn’t reach it!
Kyle – “Yesterday I was speechless to seeing Poppy Lake. I was hungry when it came to tasting food from around the world. It was fun playing dodge ball in games”.

Laura – “I thought it was very sweet when the whole school including the Nursery came to watch the torch arrive”.

Nursery Blog

This week in Nursery we have been very busy.  We have enjoyed being outside in the sunshine and playing with the new climbing equipment, bikes and scooters.  Our focus this week has been on writing our names.  Mrs Elliott and I have been very impressed with how much progress everyone has made.
The afternoon children went to assembly on Wednesday to listen to a story.  Everyone sat very nicely and listened beautifully.  The morning children visited the Reception classes to take part in Friendship Friday.
Have a good weekend

15th June

Welcome to the Darlinghurst Primary School blog!
Reception –
This week the Reception classes have started a really interesting topic about ‘Lifecycles’ and we have talked about butterflies and frogs starting as eggs, then going through many changes to become adults. We have been looking at real caterpillars in our classrooms, talking about how much they are eating and how fast they are growing. We are really excited about the 5 caterpillars going into the cocoon stage and emerging as butterflies!  For our writing we have enjoyed labelling pictures of different animal lifecycles and for our maths we have been thinking about the days of the week and the months of each year.

Year 1 –
Welcome back everyone…it’s been a long time but we are looking forward to letting you know about our fantastic learning in Year 1 this week. Out topic this term is The Seaside and as you all know we are preparing to find out further facts through our visit to the beach on Wednesday (Katey’s Birthday!!)
Here’s what the children have said they have enjoyed this week.
Katey said ‘I loved going to the allotment and finding out that the radishes we planted last term were ready to be picked and eaten…yum, yum.  The radishes were growing underground and we had to pull it out like the Enormous Turnip’
Edward said ‘I loved my Art lesson today.  I thought about drawing portraits with pastels of someone very special…I can’t tell you who yet because it’s a secret!!’
Ethan said ‘I loved writing my sea poem.  I wrote about underwater sea creatures and how they looked’
Abbie ‘I loved my Maths lesson.  I had do take away sums.  I had to be clever because I had to count back’
So as you can see we have had lots of fun and look forward to next weeks learning where we will be thinking about more creative poetry, fantasy stories under the sea and using the skill of multiplication.
Have a great weekend and keep safe!
The Year 1 Team.

Year 2 –
This week we have been learning about Olympics and we have been researching the website ‘Get set go’. They have been using atlases to find the countries competing and have really enjoyed writing their own Olympic poems.
We have been learning to tell the time and incorporating it within our day.
Next week, we will be learning about mini beasts with exciting things to do and looking forward to our year group trip to Colchester zoo!

Year 3 –
We have had an amazing week in 3C, learning all about the Olympics in London that will happen this year. We have started to investigate about different events that occur. Jay found out that there are 36 different events that will be held in London this year. The events will include very exciting sports, such as; hurdles, tennis, cycling, swimming and football. We will continue to find out about what happens in these events over the next few weeks.
We have also had the opportunity to design our own very own games that could be used in our sports day. Jacob was incredibly happy with his design because he thought it was very fun!
In English we have been practicing our comprehension skills by identifying key information in a text. We then designed a comic strip that showed Miss Crumbie key points in our stories. John was really pleased with his work because he thought it was the best work he could have done.
In maths we have been investigating different types of angles and Thomas said that it was super enjoyable because he learnt lots of new things, had fun and really enjoyed measuring angles.
Our science lesson this week involved investigating a variety of trainers that different athletes might use. Cody learnt about the different patterns on the soles and thought about the materials used, we then discussed the textures of the soles and began to test for grip.
We hope you have a great weekend!
3C, Miss Crumbie and Mrs Johnson J

Hello everybody!

We have been having a great time in Class 3B this week.
We have learned all about right angles, how to measure them and what we call angles that are bigger/smaller than a right angle. We have also been learning more about positional language.

We have used some interesting connectives to improve our sentences and created comic strips based on our favourite books.

Here are some of the things that some of the children have enjoyed learning this week:

I liked when we were measuring angles, because it was interesting we used right angles to see if an angle was obtuse or acute- Holly

I also enjoyed learning about right angles in Maths and I liked it when we printed our hands to make Fathers Day cards.- Ellie

My favourite thing was when we did the right angles, because I learned quite a lot- Ryan B

I really liked doing our Fathers Day cards, painting our hands and splogging it on the card- Ryan C

Doing the Fathers Day card and putting our hands in the paint felt nice and refreshing- Hannah

I have enjoyed English particularly the reading because it was exciting finding out what was going to happen in the book- Shaun

Thanks for all your contributions children.

Enjoy your weekend.

Miss Bernard

Year 4 –
Well what a frantic start to the final half term in Year 4. With the Olympics around the corner all of our energy has been driven into learning about the origin of the Olympic game, the torch relay and emblems and logos that symbolise the Olympics. We can’t wait until the torch arrives (p.s. it’s currently in North-East England).
In core subjects, we have been learning about friction (Science), area (Maths) and explanations (English). We had great fun explaining Olympic sports and our partners had to guess what we were talking about. Anyway, next week we’re learning about countries and sports so check back to find out more.

Year 5 –
This week we have been going down to year 6 for our maths and english lessons. We have also listened to a spike milligan poem and tried to write our own poems. We have done lots of p.e. outside on the field and have enjoyed playing rounders.

Year 6 –
What an amazing week for Year Six. We have been busy planning for our Business Enterprise Day Next Friday 22nd June. On the day we will be selling cakes, drinks crisps, washing cars, making smoothies amongst other things. Year six have also been busy   cooking with the year five teachers and can now prepare a two-course meal!
Well done Year six….working as hard as ever.
