Nursery

Lots of change because of transition but it’s only happened on Tuesday for us so far this week, next one is tomorrow.  Getting ready for our teddy bears picnic next Friday and Pirate and Princess Party the Wednesday after.  Our topic this week and last has been mini beasts, lots of bug hunts, making ladybirds from painting stones, bees from loo rolls, black play dough and pipe cleaners to make some more interesting creatures, etc.  Think that’s about it my lovely!!

Reception

This week in Reception we have had a very busy week. We have spent the mornings meeting our new teachers and learning all about year 1. It has been lots of fun and the children are beginning to look and act like year 1 children already. Next week the children will continue to meet their year 1 teachers in the morning and coming back to Reception in the afternoons, where we have got lots of fun packed jobs to do. Don’t forget the teddy bears picnic on the 11^th July and sports day on the 16^th July. Can the children please bring in a sock for a special surprise that will take place on sports day!!

Year 6

Year 6 have had an amazing week including a superb trip to Kids’ Kingdom. We are now busy planning for our year 6 show which will be performed on Friday 18^th July at 9.15….it is going to be FUN.

Nursery

Our topic for the next 2 weeks is animals from the zoo and we have been exploring in the jungle, our home corner which has been decorated to look like a jungle.  We have been finding the animals in the coloured rice, sand and play dough, and creating a zoo with lolly pop sticks!  Today we will be visiting the zoo in P.E to see how zoo animals move, and we are also making monkey faces with paper plates, boy, I said we weren’t busy but I guess I lied! Tee he he!

Reception

This week we have been learning all about pirates. We have had great fun pretending to be pirates on a treasure island, as well as exploring treasure maps, and having the opportunity to design our own maps. The class treasure hunt was very exciting, and we enjoyed decoding clues to find the treasure! We are looking forward to writing our own directions to find the treasure next week, and dressing up as pirates to end the week!

Year 4

Year 4 have continued to develop their knowledge of fractions this week by converting mixed numbers to improper fractions and then adding them. We are all enjoying learning about fractions and we find it really rewarding we learn a new skill!

In English we are still really enjoying Danny the Champion of the world. We have been introduced to new characters and have discussed how they might affect the story. We have also been writing alternative endings to chapter 8 ‘The Pit’ and it is interesting to hear other people’s ideas.

Year 4 have also been lucky enough to have taster cricket sessions. This week we have been learning skills in bowling and catching a ball.

We are loving the sunshine, even if the classrooms are a little hot! Please can we make sure all children are provided with a bottle of water and they are wearing sun cream and a hat on warmer days. Thank you

Year 6

We’ve done it! SATs week is over! All our hard work and efforts have paid off and we are looking forward to all the fun that the rest of the Summer term holds for us! Mrs Blatcher and Miss Niemann and all the school staff are incredibly proud of how well we all approached the tests and showed off all our knowledge! On Thursday, the sun was shining and we all went outside for our ‘Big Scream’, to mark the end of a hard-working week.

We can’t wait to tell you all about our upcoming events, including Business Enterprise Day, Adventure Island, Disco and the all important Year 6 Leavers show! We will also keep you posted on our Twitter feed @darlinghursty6. Please follow us!

Nursery

This week has been all things mother’s day.  Nursery children all made a mother’s day card and planted some bulbs in a pot that they had decorated.  They also made a puffy paint flower, a cake that was expertly decorated and took part in filling in a sheet all about mum!!!  Wow we have been a busy lot!!!  We hope that everyone has a fantastic mother’s day, and that you all 

enjoy your gifts.

1K

1K have been busy doing assessments. Now they are all completed we are concentrating on our Mother’s Day cards and presents. We have had fun in PE [outside] and have learned about the Sikh faith in RE. In maths we have been solving word problems and in English we finished our owl work. The highlight of the week was the visit from the owls. There was a lot of swooping and squawking! We even got to stroke Tito the Barn Owl who was lovely.  Our favourite though was Zeus the Eagle Owl. He was enormous and was big enough to carry off a fox in his talons!

Year 4

Year 4 have had a very hard working week, demonstrating their learning through assessments. The year 4 teachers are very impressed with the effort all of the children have put in! In PE we enjoyed developing football skills and we are now confident at dribbling and stilling the ball. After lots of research, designing and presenting  we have been very creative this week at making our ideal classroom. We used shoeboxes and a variety of other materials and we are very proud of them.

Keep up the reading and please ensure all homework is in on time to an appropriate standard. My maths is set on a weekly basis to check to see if your teacher has set it.

Finally to those who celebrate it Happy Mother’s Day from year 4!

5CW

5CW have been busy as always. We have been looking more at our class book 101 Dalmations.  We have been working on role play from when Pongo and Missus are reunited with their pups and thinking how they felt and how what sort of characters the Badduns are.

In maths we have looked more at percentages, fractions and decimal numbers and their links, why not test us and see what we've learnt.

In science we predicted which material was the best for insulating sound, if you want to know which material would be the best sound proofer for our bedrooms, just ask!

Next week we have a class quiz and are allowed to bring in a snack and drink, there will be prizes for the winning teams!

Year 6

Well, after  a week of extensive testing and assessment, year 6 have shown they are on track to achieve some great results this year! It has been a welcome  and relaxing morning today as we make surprises ready for the best day of the year on Sunday!!!!!!!!!!!

The weather has again, enabled us to carry out some of our science and English outside….that meant we got very messy, which always pleases the children!

The Easter Holidays will be a  well – deserved break  but –don’t worry…..lots of homework is on its way !

Nursery

This week we have been learning about the fire brigade so it’s been all things fire in nursery.  We have had fire foam, a mixture of red and yellow paint, and shaving foam, our role play area has been transformed into a fire engine, with lots of fire fighter dressing up clothes available.  We have decorated some cups that will be knocked down by our water hoses, empty shampoo bottles filled with water, and P.E is drop and roll to avoid the smoke!! On Friday we will also be having a small fire drill (a ringing bell) just to finish off the week, and help our new children to see what happens when we hear an alarm.

Today started with a mile walk around the playground carrying cups of water.  This was to take part in Sports Relief and to have a little understanding of what it is like to have to collect water for your family.  Unfortunately, the enthusiasm of some children to complete the laps as fast as possible meant that their families would have no water to drink as it ended up on the playground!  Those who took the laps at a steady pace completed the mile with a full cup of water.

We have continued work on our playscripts as well as our learning about fractions.  We are quite good at this now and even know some equivalent fractions.

I have been very impressed with the standard of the talks to the class.  Well done to everyone who has presented their talk so far – everyone has managed without notes as well as speaking clearly so everyone could hear.

Year 4

Year 4 have been very pleased to see the first day of Spring this week. To celebrate, they enjoyed a long walk to Leigh Library on Wednesday . They had a great time hearing a talk from the librarian and exploring all of the lovely books at the library.

Year 4 have been finishing their final week on ‘Explanation Texts’ this week. Ask your child to explain to you all the different ones they have made. They range from ‘Teacher Pleasers’ to ‘Hypnotising machines’ all very exciting!

We have introduced ‘Pen Licences’ into year 4. If the children have neat, joined handwriting they can now use a pen for written work instead of a pencil. Let’s see how many we can get before the end of the year!

5CW

5CW have had a busy week. We have been learning about fractions and decimal numbers in maths. We designed our own gardens and worked out what fraction, decimal number and percentage we would need for each feature. There were some very interesting designs. 

In English we joined with 5C and had a tag debate on the use of animals for fur just for fashion. The children came up with really strong arguments for both sides. 

5CW have had great fun with outside learning, learning orienteering skills and in science we have been testing sound with tin and string phones. We joined 16 together to test the strength of sound.  A few children made a rhythm by tapping, pinging the string and rubbing the cans. It was really effective. So all in all just another busy week in 5CW. 

Year 6

Another busy week in Year Six!. Revision, science outside, For Sports, Music and Sport Relief Day. Wow! With two weeks until the Easter holidays and only three weeks after that until SATs, we are very , very busy revising and organising assessmentsme of the Year Six children wish to start a newspaper for the school which is a lovely idea…they would like some parent input…………………….? Anyway, we are going to enjoy the lovely weather today at break and lunch and continue with our hard work. Well done gang!

Nursery

We have been looking at the police and ambulance services this week. Our home corner became a police station our outside area a road with a zebra crossing and some police cars made out of junk. We done some finger printing and looked at the results through a magnifying glass and in P.E we made up a road and looked at different road signs to see their meaning.

Hi there everybody,

1B have been learning lots of new facts about owls and have been developing their addition and subtraction skills using numbers up to 40. They had to think of ways to make their writing about owls more interesting and learned about using generalisers like all, a few, most and openers like interestingly, amazingly and surprisingly. They have chosen to write their owl reports to the Reception children. They hope that the children will enjoy listening them.

Hello,

In 1K we have been learning about addition and subtraction using numbers up to 40.  We have used lots of resources to help us including dienes rods, multilink, number lines and bead strings. We have been working very hard and some of our work is quite challenging!

In English we continue to learn about owls. We have been sharing facts and writing factual statements using interesting sentence openers and connectives to make our writing more interesting.

In PE we have been practising our throwing and catching skills. We are very good! To make it more difficult for ourselves we moved further away from one another and used benches to make us taller so we had to throw higher.

In RE we have learned all about Sikhism and Guru Nanak. We watched a short story about his life and then retold it in our own words.

Hello everyone!

I cannot believe it’s that time of the week again!  It is funny how time flies when you are having fun. A busy week again had by all with lots of learning all about money and finding the total value of both pounds and pence.  Perhaps if you are out shopping at the weekend you could help your grownups with the total amount of money they will need.  English has been very informative as we have been learning how to scan a text using key words to find new information about Florence Nightingale.  I wonder if you could tell your grown up how to box up?

Macy said ‘ I loved making my Florence Nightingale game.  She was travelling from London to Scutari in Turkey ‘’

Camren said ‘My game was really good fun.  I played it with Toby and Toby lost because he ended up in Russia which is not where he was meant to be!  He was meant to be in Scutari but the game was very close!’

We have started looking at playscripts this week.  We are now familiar with how plays are set out and Miss White led a drama session that showed us  the importance of stage directions.  We are now starting to write our own plays.

In science we have been looking at different food groups and what makes a healthy diet.  Why not challenge your child to identify the different food groups on their plate at mealtimes!

As today is Pi day, we looked at what Pi is and the first 27 digits, we tried to see how many we could remember!  We also enjoyed taking part in the number challenge at school.  We had a crash course on prime numbers, negative numbers and factors so our maths skills have really increased!

We have been amazing this week as we practise for the Spelling and Grammar Test that is now a part of their SATs.The lovely weather has meant that we have been learning outside a lot  and our science work on the properties of materials has been  wonderful. They need to ensure they are practising their times tables and spellings regularly as well as completing all of their homework.

Nursery

Well we had an extremely good turnout for world book day. Most children dressed up, and those who didn’t were able to borrow one of nursery’s outfits.  A fantastic  15 mums stayed in the morning and 17 in the afternoon and we all had lots of fun.  This week’s topic was boats and trains, and we have been spending a lot of time outside seeing if our boats sink or float.  You may also have seen us doing the Locomotion around the school, everyone hung on for dear life and we managed quite a train.

Reception

This week in Reception we have been learning about growing.  We have based our learning around the book, Jasper's beanstalk. 

The children have planted their own beans. 

In maths we have been learning to tell the time and use positional language.  

The children have enjoyed outdoor learning this week.

We have been learning all about owls this week and have found out some very interesting facts.  We shared our work with ours Mums and Nans when they came to visit us on Thursday.  It has been a fun week!

In Maths we have continued work on our numbers to 40. We have been ordering using the Abacus, carpet tiles, number cards and chalks. We have also been working on place value and working out how many tens and ones in our numbers.

In science we have learned all about `The Dark` and as we have been learning about owls we read The owl who was afraid of the dark.

We have been practising addition and subtraction in maths.

“I like using empty number lines for subtraction.  For example if you have 27 – 13 you can take away 10 and then add 3 back on” (Eva Nicholls).

“Also we learnt about rounding to the nearest 10.  If we had 19 add 13 then you could round to the nearest 10 and add on the ones” (Julia Watson).

We have been looking at information texts in English and finding the answers to questions using BBC Famous People website.

In science we looked around the school to see how electricity makes some appliances work.  We found out that electricity can make things move, light up, make sound and heat up and some can do more than one these things.

On Bring a Mum to School Day we made icing animals with Daniel’s mummy and we also made settings for an adapted Little Red Riding Hood Story.

Hope you all had a fun day with your children yesterday (if you managed to join them).  Unfortunately I missed you all as I was feeling rather poorly….all back to normal now and ready for some more super learning.

Jack said ‘I loved PE because we were learning how to dance to 4 beats and 8 beats.  I think I am getting much better now!’

Alfie said ‘I enjoyed Bring a Mum to School Day because she helped me make a 3D model of a story character and a setting. My setting was the cave and my character was a wolf.’

Year 4

Year 4 have had a very exciting week! On Wednesday we enjoyed a very interesting International event at Westcliff high School for boys. The children travelled to different countries, finding out different facts and even learning some basic phrases in the native language! 

Thursday was a lovely day with children, teacher and even some mum’s dressing up for World Book Day.  Lots of effort was put into costumes and the children enjoyed having a book themed day.  Bring a mum to school day was a huge success in year 4, so thank you to all who came, especially those who brought activities to do with the children.

Year 6

Well, what a week! Year six have been working incredibly hard in  maths and English this week. |They have been learning  about Pie Charts and how to read and record data in them. In English we have begun work on our adventure story and we hope to invite you in to hear them during an assembly.

Bring a mum to school day was incredible; we had seed planting, Italian lessons, tortoises, a veterinary nurse talk and badge making- an amazing day! Thank you mums!

We have also been involved in Outdoor Learning  as most parents will know due to the muddy children we have returned to them at the end of the day.

Nursery

It’s been a very busy week in nursery, we have had 9 new children start this week, 4 in the morning and 5 in the afternoon and we hope that they enjoy being a part of our nursery.

This week we have been looking at rubbish and recycling like the rest of the school, we have looked at a story of a teddy who got put in the bin, and for PE we done an assault course to get the recycling in the bin.

We also visited Hagrid’s hut and had story’s and show and tell in there, wow what a week!!!

Reception

This week in school, there has been lots of activity and learning taking place around the topic of ‘Rubbish’ and this has continued through Reception. In Reception we have been learning about ‘The Little Green Monster’ who started off as a naughty little monster who didn’t look after the planet but soon learnt that Earth was beautiful and to keep it beautiful he had to make sure he reduced, reused and recycled everyday objects. So Reception we have been green monsters and have been very busy recycling lots of different objects around school. We have had lots of fun with some very big boxes, cardboards tubes and bottle caps! An exciting week was had by all and it has been lovely to see the children take an independent approach to their learning. Well done everybody.

We have had a 'Rubbish' week! We have learned how to make paper, learned about reduce, reuse, recycle and we have sorted rubbish depending on the materials they are made from.

We have enjoyed work in Hagrid's Hut and have had a class competition to make robots out of our Rubbish. We have had a fantastic week!

Hello everyone!

Well we are all rubbished out!! We have found out so much information about how we can help save our plant by reducing, reusing and recycling.  We have been thinking about making adverts for street cleaners as Polly was very poorly.  We have also been designing our own uniform for street cleaners using rubbish or recycling old clothes.

Here is what the children have said they enjoyed this week.

Matthew said ‘I have enjoyed designing my outfit.  I was totally embarrassed walking down the catwalk but I was chosen by the other children as the best outfit in 2C’

Joseph said ‘I thought maths was exciting but a bit challenging because I had to round up or down when taking away 19 and 11.’

We have had an exciting time during Rubbish Week in 3AJ.  We have learned about Reducing, Reusing, Recycling and Up-cycling where we make something new out of an existing item.  Jam jars will be returning home looking completely different after the class learned decoupage and colour skills.  We used our creative skills to  turn our rubbish into bubble blowers with some spectacular bubbles!  In maths, we have learned how to draw circles using a compass in order to make trees out of recycling. We now know how plastic is turned into pencils and fleece material – a long process!  We have learned a lot about the importance of recycling and how it is everyone’s responsibility to care for our planet.

Rubbish Week!

This week has been Rubbish Theme week. We have had a great time learning all about how to REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE. In Year 4 we have been up cycling jam jars. Up cycling is when you take an unwanted item and make it into to something attractive or useful to use. We have made our jam jars into candle holders and pencil pots using the art technique of Decoupage.

We have also been designing and making our own ‘Teacher Pleaser’ machines as part of our Explanation Text work in English. They were fantastic, ask your child to tell you about their own idea!

5CW

We have had a ‘rubbish’ week. In maths we analysed data for all the recycling and rubbish that was bought in. We compiled bar graphs to see which rubbish we throw away the most. Ask us to see what we throw the most and least away of. We have looked at persuasive language, ready to save the world and get everyone onto recycling. We took your trash and made treasure, musical treasure. As a class we did our version of Stomp and played our instruments to a rhythm in assembly. Mrs Weddell was extremely proud of our performance and made us play it again! What a great ‘Rubbish’ week it has been, who knew you could have so much fun with rubbish?

Reception

This week in Reception we have started our learning on Jack and the Beanstalk. We have been getting creative with fairytale walks, making bean stalks and making our own story maps of the story. The children have really thrown their selves into their learning this week and with an unexpected visit from the giant to our classrooms, it prompted lots of questions and investigations around how big the giant was by the giant footprint he left behind. we have been measuring his footprint against different objects and finding which is the biggest and which is the smallest. We will continue this topic next week with the children eager to find out more about the giant and his golden castle in the clouds.

Please don't forget Tuesday's open classroom event where you can come and have a look at the children's work so far!! Please remember you need to inform your child's teacher if you would like to visit as they need time to prepare and get the children's work ready for your visit after school. If you do not inform your child's teacher their work may not be available to view so please get in touch with them and if you are unable to visit this time do not panic as we will be offering this opportunity over several occasions throughout the year.

Medivet visited us and showed us some rabbits called Fuzzy and Flopsy.  They came because we are learning about plants and animals.  They asked us who wanted to be a vet and what pets we had at home.  To survive, animals need food and water and a bed.  If cats purr it normally means they are happy.  The vets wear a mask so they don’t catch germs from the animals; some of us got to dress up in the masks and hats worn by vets.  Habitats are a natural place where animals live.  A frog’s habitat is a pond and a rabbit’s habitat is the countryside.  We are looking forwarding to going to the beach on Monday to look for invertebrates.  I think we will find crabs, mussels, cockles, sea snails and shrimps.  (Ash Collins and Phoebe Tomsett).

Well, well, well….what can I say!!  We were windswept, we were cold but what fun we had at the beach.  We were searching for invertebrates to find out which habitat; water, beach or mud would be a suitable home for them.  I was hoping to find my favourite invertebrate, the Hermit Crab but unfortunately we did not find one…..however, luckily,  and showing great detective eyes Ashleigh spotted a Hermit Crab shell so I was very pleased!

Here is what the children have said they have enjoyed this week

Jake said ‘I love learning about invertebrates.  I found shrimps, cockles and periwinkles.  My favourite habitat for the invertebrates was the beach’

Reanna said ‘I have enjoyed writing my adapted story.  It was all about a girl called Reanna who met a mysterious, ugly witch who gave her magic beans.  It was called Reanna and the Beanstalk’

Reception

Over the last two weeks, the children have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the story of The Queen's Knickers and royalty. As a special request from the Queen, they have been designing and labelling a new pair of knickers for her! There have been some fantastic, original ideas. We have looked at different aspects of royalty, both past and present and this has helped the children to extend their general knowledge and explore new vocabulary. All the children and staff in Reception enjoyed dressing up as kings, queens, princesses, etc, and having a tea party in honour of the Queen.  We especially loved making and eating our homemade jam tarts! Thank you for your support with our dressing up day as well as the children's homework this week, we have had some great pictures and models of castles.

In maths, we have been working on numbers within 15, counting, ordering and finding one more and one less than a given number.

Next week we will be starting a new topic on Chinese New Year.

1K have been busy writing instructions using bossy verbs and time connectives. We are doing very well! In maths we have been learning how to partition our teen numbers for our addition and subtraction equations.

We have been busy on the IPADs finding out information about different types of houses, which is our History topic.  In PE we have started Gym work. We are learning to move across the beam in a variety of ways, balancing and turning too

Year 6

We have all had a busy week this week meeting parents and continuing to work very hard towards our SATs. The children are enjoying the adventures of Omri in The  Indian In The Cupboard and we are looking forward to seeing the finished projects at eh end of half term.

Just a reminder, My Maths homework has been set for the children and they have ALL been given password reminders. Spellings are given every week for testing on  Friday along with a mental maths test and a times tables test. Please make sure you know your tables year six.

Reception

It has been a very busy week in Reception.  The staff would like to say a very big WELL DONE to all the children for the brilliant Nativities.  We hope you enjoyed them.

The children have been participating in a variety of Christmas activities, songs and stories.  We have enjoyed a creative week with lots of glue and glitter!

Year 4

The children have had a busy week trying to produce their best work during assessments.  4L have had an exciting week showing off their musical talents playing Ukelele in front of the rest of the school during assembly.  They did very well and the others children really enjoyed it!

In English, year 4 wrote their own newspaper reports Based on the story 'Stig of the dump'.  They were very interesting!  In maths, the children planned and budgeted for their own Christmas dinner.  They really enjoyed looking through supermarket magazines to find festive foods for their dinner, yum yum!

We are looking forward to our Christmas party on Monday which is party dress, and Christmas jumper day Tuesday ready for our Christmas dinner!

Year 6

Don’t forget the year six cake sale tomorrow…….hundreds of cakes and sweets for sale as we are raising money for HARP and Little Havens .The children have completed their half termly assessments and have done extremely well this term; a result of  hard  work and their incredible teachers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reception

Well what a busy couple of weeks we have had in Reception! We have all been busy writing our letters to Santa and all the children have had a fantastic try at using their phonic knowledge from the last term to write their ideas about the christmas presents they would like to find under the Christmas tree. Well done Children all the teachers are very proud of you all. We have continued our topic on Winter and have had great fun making bird feeders to keep some of the animals warm as the weather becomes even colder.

As well as the hustle and bustle of our learning in the classroom, we have enjoyed our outside area, where we have been experimenting with the topic of winter and winter colours in our writing, drawing and painting.

We are well under way with our Christmas Nativity of 'It's a Baby', which you should have all received your two tickets per family for. Don't forget RW, RF and am Nursery will be performing in the morning and RB, RN and pm nursery will be performing in the afternoon of next Thursday. So not long left for us to practise!! The children are doing really well, but don't forget to practise those words and get those big singing voices out as I am sure all you mummy's and daddy's will be very impressed with our own little angels of Darlinghurst Primary School. Please don't forget to bring costumes in if you have been asked as we will be starting our dress rehearsals next week!!

Have a fantastic weekend, wrap up warm and don't forget to come to our Christmas bizarre on Saturday where you may be able to pick up some last minute Christmas ideas and even see the one and only Father Christmas!

Hello everyone!

Another busy week…we have been super mathematicians and can now use so many methods to find the difference and total of two, two digit numbers.  We have used bar modelling, empty number square, empty number lines and number squares.  We have also heard about Thomas Farriners cat and how he felt when he smelt the Great Fire of London.

Here is what the children said they enjoyed;

Ruby said ‘I loved listening to the story teller John this week.  He read us a story about Pirates which really made me laugh’!

Martha said ‘ In PE this week we performed a gymnastic routine which we made up ourselves. I have been practising balancing and jumping.  I made a rountine with 4 skills.’

Year 3

Year 3 have had lots of fun this week writing diary entries based upon The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch. They have been very creative and have shown great imagination. In P.E. the children were using Speed Stacks which was a lot of fun if not a little noisy! Thank you to the 4Sports guys for providing our children with fun and exciting P.E. lessons this term.

Year 4

Year 4 have had another busy week! Our favourite part of the week has been ‘Ancient Egyptian Day’ which was on Thursday run by a company called ‘Portals to the Past’. Mark the historian helped us to understand lots of facts and we enjoyed participating in all of the fun activities. Did you know that some Pharaohs would employ a slave to put honey on his head in order to keep the flies away from the Pharaoh! Some great costumes were worn as well on the so thank you for the support at home with this!

We are beginning to learn our Christmas songs this week which has been fun and we are looking forward to performing for all the parents at our carol concert.

Reception

This week in Reception we have been thinking about the season winter and with the sudden change in the weather it has really helped us think of some lovely descriptive words about winter whilst on our winter walks around the school. All the children agreed that winter was very cold and one person thought it felt 'like someone was biting our cheeks'.

We have had great fun thinking about how ice is formed and the changes ice goes through to turn back to water. In addition to this we have tried snow writing, exploring our new winter wonderland role-play areas and using the arctic animals in our small world areas to practise our speaking and listening skills. Next week we will be continuing our thinking and learning about winter, so please ensure all children have warm clothing as we will be outside, making bird feeders and generally having more exciting fun!!

Once again thank you for all the lovely home school learning that has come in this week. It's been lovely to see all the children's lovely ideas. Please remember to fill in those wow stars with all the achievements the children do at home so we can share them in the classroom.

Hello Everybody,

The week has really whizzed by seems like only yesterday that we were doing our last blog J

The children have been very busy as usual; sequencing and ordering numbers to 20 and writing some amazing versions of Rapunzel with some great adjectives and interesting words. I was very proud of them. We also had fun investigating pushes and pulls using the Nursery bikes and scooters.

Here are some of the activities that the children have particularly enjoyed:

I really enjoyed learning in Science about pushes and pulls. We the bikes and scooters to help us- Marcus

Writing our Rapunzel story was exciting because we thought of different words to into it and it was fun- Charlotte

I enjoyed learning all about numbers to 20 because it was fun- Sharna

I liked learning all about the ones place and tens place in Maths because I thought it was quite fun and easy to learn- James

I liked doing 4Sports PE lesson because we do loads of jumping and running-  Rosie

Hi,

1K have worked really hard this week [as usual] We have been comparing old and new toys in History. Children brought in old toys from home and were able to discuss and answer questions about their toys. Those children who didn’t have a toy asked lots of interesting questions.

The children have been learning about place value in Maths and did very well on their test. They have also written some fantastic Rapunzel stories, using interesting adjectives and Golden Sentences.

On Wednesday we went to St. Paul’s Cathedral in London because it got burnt down in 1666 and there were models showing the Old St. Paul’s and the new St. Paul’s.  The new Cathedral looks different because on the old one it looked like a castle and on the new one there is a dome.  We also went to The Monument and we saw the River Thames and Tower Bridge.  It was hard work to climb to the top because there were 311 steps and it was really tiring.  It was the best school trip ever! The next day we had a “project day” and some of us chose to make  clay models of St. Paul’s and The Monument and tried to add detail and improved them to look like the real thing.  Some of us made a game about the Great Fire of London.  (Lila-Rose Lewington and Chloe Machipisa).

Hello everyone!

Wow!  What an amazing week!! Thank you to all the parents that helped on our exhausting but exhilarating trip…we couldn’t have done it without you!

Here is what the children said they enjoyed this week..

Tina said ‘I loved the trip, especially when we walked up The Monument steps and The Whispering Gallery steps because I am not scared of heights!!’

Pheobe said ‘I think London is great!  I bought a pencil from The Monument and it had gold flames on the top.  If you tip the Monument on its side it will land on the old Thomas Farriner Bakery!’

Next stop….Christmas Preparations….CAN’T WAIT!!

Year 5

Year 5 have had a good week learning about creating characters and describing them. We have used ‘hot seating’ and drama to identify characters feelings and show off our great questioning skills. This is linked to our book we are reading The Peppermint Pig for 5W and Tom’s Midnight Garden 5C. Ask us questions about the book and test our great memory skills!

We have been looking patterns and sequencing in maths, we have had lots of fun challenges and found lots of patterns. We look forward to carrying on with our class books

The Darlinghurst Cross Country Team ran against other local schools on Thursday at Garon’s Park. This was the biggest cross country event yet with over 1200 children attending. A big well done to the whole team who have been training hard and put in lots of effort on the day. Libby Mitchell came 8^th in the year 3 girls race and Taylor Banks came 9^th in the year 6 boys race, these are great achievements when running against 120 children. We would also like to thank the parents who came to support us on the day.  

Year 6

Year 6 have, as usual, been working very hard. The children have produced some very impressive  diary entries  and some children have progressed incredibly quickly with their writing. In science we have been looking at how our eyes work and had some fun when we looked at some optical illusions together.

Next week we are getting ready for more tests so children should be very quiet indoors for their parents/ carers as they will be busy revising.

Nursery

It’s all getting very exciting in nursery.  We have written our letters to Father Christmas and have posted them.  So fingers crossed it won’t be long before we get a reply.  Thank you for your continued support with saving us junk modelling items.  The children are really proud of their robots and these can be seen in our porch area along with some photos from our walk to the post box.  Please remember to keep bringing in those WOW moments and any other bits for your child’s learning journey.  Only 33 sleeps as Mrs Manley keeps reminding me!

Reception

This week in Reception our topic has been friendship and we have read the book Dumbo.  We have thought about what makes a good friend and how we can work together as a team. 

In Maths Mastery we have been thinking about using and applying numbers to 7.  The children have enjoyed singing 7 green bottles.

Thank you to all those children that completed their healthy lunchbox homework.  We had some lovely ideas.

1K have worked extremely hard this week in Maths. they have been learning about 'teen numbers' and place value. It is a tricky concept and something we will be working on a lot.

In French we have been looking at the names of unhealthy foods ( as it was health week last week we thought we would have a change)!

English has been lots of fun! We have been concentrating on the Rapunzel story which we will be writing about next week. We have been looking at sentence openers, adjectives and time connectives to make our writing more exciting!

Hello everybody,

Class 1B have had a very busy week and are trying very hard with their learning.

In Mathematics Mastery lessons the children have been focussing on numbers 11 to 19 and learning about Place Value. They had to work out how many tens and how many ones for numbers up to 10. They were then thinking about numbers greater than or less than using numbers to 20. Some of the tasks were quite challenging; but they all tried their best.

In English they have been trying hard to improve the way that they write their sentences. They decided that a "Golden Sentence" needs to have capital letters and full stops in the correct places, finger spaces and adjectives to describe people, places and things. The sentences that they have written about Rapunzel have been fantastic.

Here are some of the things that some of the children have particularly enjoyed this week:

I have enjoyed learning numbers up to 20 because I like doing bigger numbers- Alesha I liked Pushing and Pulling because I liked playing the game- Theo Learning about Rapunzel and doing Golden Sentences was interesting- Charlotte I enjoyed learning about Pushing and Pulling , I learned that you can push and pull a door- Laura I have been enjoying doing my Shape and Pattern Assessment because I like my shapes- Nathan

In 2A we have been learning about the Plague and the Great Fire of London.  In ICT we created powerpoint presentations and designed different backgrounds to make them look old and used clip art and animation and searched images from the internet safely.  “I loved writing instructions yesterday.  I wrote mine about How to make a cure for the Plague” (Julia Watson).  “Using bar modelling to work out addition and subtraction word problems was interesting and new”  (Fletcher Price).  We used instructions to make bread just like they did in 1666 in Pudding Lane.  We are looking forward to baking it today on an open fire.

Hello Everyone!

How quickly time flies when you’re having fun….can’t believe that next week we will be travelling to London!

This week we have been scientists and thinking about how we can make a potion to cure Mrs Blyth’s Plague!  We have thought about how instructions needed  imperative verbs and time connectives and some children even thought about adverbs!   Maths has seen us solve word problems using bar modelling, number rods and empty number lines….the children should be able to tell you what that means!!  Gymnastics has been fabulous and we have seen real progress with children’s floor work; they have been making routines using point and patch balances, bridges, rolls and jumps….we hope to see some of them at the next Olympics!!

Here is what the children have said they enjoyed…

Aysha said ‘I loved PE because I am really good at stretching my arms and legs when making a bridge….my tummy nearly touches the ceiling!’

Daniel said ‘I enjoyed PE as well because  I like to warm up and cool down so my muscles do not get pulled.’

Looking forward to seeing lots of you on Wednesday for our mammoth trip to London!!

Year 4

Another busy week for 4E and 4L!

This week we have continued our work on Play scripts and have designed a new character to be part of ‘Stig of the Dump’! In Maths we have looked at doubling and halving and have made our own number cruncher machines.

In Science we have looked at conductors and insulators and have had a great time exploring circuits. We have also learnt some of the days of the week and months of the year in French!

Phew, busy busy!

Year 6

Another hard working week in Year 6!

In English, 6B have been working on some fantastic descriptive writing, creating their own chapters of Goodnight Mr Tom. Meanwhile, 6N have been writing some excellent diary entries of evacuees. We are beginning to use an impressive range of vocabulary and definitely have some amazing authors in the making!

Maths lessons have been as fun as ever this week- we have been using all the multiplication facts we already know to help us solve new and more complex problems. We practised using lots of handy tricks to help us solve problems like 25 x 19 without using column multiplication.

Science was also very interesting on Wednesday. We made paper helicopters and investigated how adding paper clips changed the speed of them falling. They worked brilliantly together in teams and finished the session by performing their dances to the class. Check out the photos below!

Reception

This week in Reception we have been thinking about staying healthy. We have thought about healthy eating and exercise.  The children have talked about the importance of having fruit or vegetables and each day we have looked in our own lunch boxes to check.  We have also had a selection of healthy snacks each day. 

On Monday we ate our homework! The children were asked to bring in a piece of fruit for a tasting session. We loved this! 

On Wednesday we had a visitor from a Bollywood dancer. She taught us some Bollywood moves and we really really enjoyed the dancing. 

It has been a lovely week. Have a good weekend.

We have been working on 2D shapes in Maths. We have put our shapes into patterns and have even made ourselves into a repeating pattern.

In English we have been learning all about Rapunzel. We have written character descriptions using Golden Sentences.

As it is Health week we have been learning about the Eatwell plate and how to choose healthy foods. We have made our own healthy food plates in Design and Technology.

We have also enjoyed learning how to dance like a Bollywood star and the boys were particularly good at this.

Hello Everyone!

What a fabulous, gruesome week we have all had!! Mrs Blyth has been poorly…she has been vomiting in class, had these atrocious boils and was covered in fleas!!  Mrs Collison and Mr Marsden had to magically turn into The Plague Doctor to ensure she was treated effectively by using imperative verbs such as DON’T spread germs,  COVER your mouth when you cough and  KEEP inside your house!.  Fortunately, she was one of the lucky ones and managed to survive this terrible disease!

The children have told me that they are finding column addition and subtraction really tricky so we have used empty number lines to add and subtract two, two digit numbers….hopefully they can show you how this is done at home.

Atiya said ‘I enjoyed it when Mrs Blyth had the Black Death and we had to make her feel better.  ’

Karter said ‘I loved learning about the value of different coins.  I know that 1p is the lowest value coin. ’

Year 4

Thank you to all the parents who sent in some fruit and a food packet. We loved the fruit salad and had an interesting lesson looking at food labels.

This week we have also been exploring ‘Play scripts’ and have been reading them and acting them out.

Next week we hope to write our own play script based on ‘Stig of the Dump’. In Maths we have looked at rounding to the nearest 10 and 100 and have played lots of games to help us to remember what to do. If you have some dice at home you could play a game too!

The weather has turned a lot colder this week and we have been wrapping up warm for playtime and lunchtime. Please make sure you child has cold weather clothes with them every day such as a coat.

Year 6

Well Year 6 are re living World War 2 this week. What with rationing, diary entries of an evacuee and Goodnight Mr Tom, we feel we are living parallel lives! In maths we have been looking at formal and informal methods of multiplication, multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000 as well as practising for mental maths………..keep practising your times tables please!
